The Benefits of Being ‘Self-Partnered’

It doesn’t take much to know that for most Millennials these days, the last thing on our minds is getting married and having kids. Being part of a generation constantly judged by Boomers and consistently surpassed by Gen Z-ers— it’s no wonder we have no time to get into any serious and long-term relationships. Apart from surviving our day to day with living expenses too high beyond our salaries, we are also trying to cope with existential crises, peer pressure, and hell even climate change. Emma Watson said it best herself, "I never believed the whole 'I'm happy single' spiel," she said. "I was like, 'This is totally spiel.' It took me a long time, but I'm very happy (being single). I call it being self-partnered." We are at the golden age of singlehood, people. Here’s how we can best enjoy it.

  1. You can travel the world and learn about different cultures

Freelancing and remote working has increased over the years. With the sole purpose of having the freedom to travel and live anywhere in the world. With having no dependents, it’s easy for us to get up and go whenever and wherever.

  1. Save for yourself and save for the world

You have vast resources (a.k.a. Your salary) to use for your own savings since you won’t have to go on any dates or spend for things like school supplies or diapers. Not only that, you can also choose to spend your money on charities or good causes.

  1. Control over your own time

Not having a spouse or child also means you have full control over your schedule. No need to depend on third-parties if you want to go somewhere or run errands. Save for the occasional meetings with potential clients or regulars, you run on your own clock.

  1. You can flirt all you want

No need to feel guilty if you’re crushing over someone by the coffee bar or if you meet the occasional fling over drinks. No judgement here! Being single is fun and meeting new people is even better.

  1. You can have more time for friends

You know the story all too well, friend gets a boyfriend/girlfriend, you see that friend less and less these days. Not you. You can always make time for friends in their times of need or celebration.

  1. Learn to be independent

Learning to be alone can be one of the hardest things anyone goes through. Some people may never experience it. But there’s a benefit in learning to live with yourself. You become self-sufficient, confident, and self-reliant. You learn to love yourself and prioritize yourself first over anyone else and that’s really ok.

  1. Avoid settling for a bad match

Daniel Sloss said it best, if everyone is a puzzle piece, then don’t try to cram someone’s puzzle piece into yours if it doesn’t fit. Don’t settle for something that isn’t right for you.“There’s nothing wrong with taking time for yourself to work out who you are before you go out there into the dating world, because how can you offer who you are if you don’t know who you are?” - Daniel Sloss

  1. No need to pay for dependents in healthcare

Imagine the savings you could have if you didn’t need to pay for any dependents with your healthcare plan. Every penny goes to you and you alone. Feels good, doesn’t it?

Bottomline: being single is great! You shouldn’t feel pressured to find a partner if you aren’t ready yet. Don’t get peer pressured by friends getting married and the occasional auntie’s asking you if you’re dating anyone. If any boomer tries to heckle you into your singledom, just yell out “Ok Boomer” and move on. Life's too short to worry about these things. Enjoy it while you can and be proud to be single!
